Inception opening analysis

At first we see the company logos who aided the people making this film. In the background we can hear a big orchestral sound. The sound is a mixture of big brass instruments which could possibly represent something important but then it cuts out.

We then see a shot of the sea in slow motion, the waves crashing slowly against each other again giving the image of power. As soon as the orchestral music cuts out we only hear that big crashing of waves.

The scene then cuts to a man washed up in the sea, the sound of waves have died down now but you can still hear it in the background but the sound of trickling water can be heard. Upon seeing this man washed up on the beach we begin to have an enigma being created for us. Who is this man? Why is he here? What happened to him?

The scene then goes to the image of two little children both male and female. Again an enigma is created; who are these children? Why are they all alone? We hear their laughs echo as if we are in some sort of dream. We hear the music become really slow and sad and we begin to realise, as the man looks up, that they are related to him; they must be his children.

We then come to a scene with the over the shoulder shot; the person whose shoulder we are looking over, is pointing a gun at the man who is washed up on the beach.

Marnie analysis

  • As the film begins the beginning titles and company logos are shown through the use of visual effect, in this case the use of turning pages of a book gives the viewer th
  • e hint that this story is based on a novel.

  • Some pragmatic music calms down when the title of the film is shown then the music picks up and calms again, this is continued for a while to build tension.  Then all of a sudden, all the music stops and the film picture begins. From this point onward there is only diegetic sound coming from the actions seen on screen.
The diegetic sound is begun with the sound of high heels from a woman walking. This sound also gives us the idea that this woman is all on her own seeing as though there are no other noises to be heard from all around. however we do not see the woman's face which creates an enigma to who she is.

We now see everything in the scene which gives us the image of the full mis en scene.
The use of the hand bag prop tells us that it is a significant object in the scene. This significance is emphasised from the visible bright yellow colour of  the bag, and the tight grasp the woman has over the bag she's carrying.
We know that the character visible to the audience is a woman from the clothing e.g. the hat, coat and also judging by the sound her high heels.

The establishing shot shows us that this character is in a train station in the city. we know that she is in the city because of the gas shutter clearly visible in the background that would be found commonly in large community's, in this case the city. Also this shot has converging lines to aid with drawing the viewers eye to the woman slowly walking away from the camera. furthermore, we could also determine the weather and maybe even the season of which this scene is set, we can do this by looking at her clothing, she is wearing a tweed coat and scarf which are tell-tale signs that the weather is cold, meaning it could be Autumn/Winter time. The camera movement is also a key element to drawing attention to the woman and the bag e.g. using tracking to follow the woman/bag tightly and then slowly stopping to allow her to get further ahead and to show some of her surroundings for and establishing sh
      • The woman looks to be going somewhere at this point as she stops and puts down a suit case and is waiting at the train.
      • The music completely stop's in this scene, cuts from first scene straight to a close up of a man saying: 'Robbed'. He  points at the safe with a direct eye line match to show where the money was stolen from. He then informs the other characters how much money was stolen. At this point we begin to solve the enigma of what was in the yellow bag; the stolen money.

  • Shortly afterwards the same man tells us who the person was that stole the bag, Marian Holland While. He repeats the name of the woman three times. By doing this he is addressing the audience making sure they know who it was who stole the money and to apply a name to the female character from the first scene even though we only saw her from behind. Also his description of the woman who stole the money suggests that him and her had some form of relationship or that he has or had some form of interest in her.

After this, a tall man enters the scene. We can tell that he is of more significance than the other characters because he takes up most of the screen as well as him being very tall which demonstrates power.

  •  During these conversations, there has been use of a shot reverse shot format which is used a lot in converstaions that are significant to the film.

Then it cuts to a shot where the woman who appears to have stolen the money as she walks from the behind the camera down a hall way which looks like its in a hotel because there is a bell boy which suggest he works for the hotel, the bellboy is carrying to big parcels for this dark haired woman, as they walk away from the camera. There are also loads of doors which suggest they are hotel rooms. Then Alfred Hitchcock appears in the shot because he appears in all his films.

Shortly afterwards there is a scene where a woman ius washing out hair dye which suggests that the person who robbed the money is ttrying to change her identity as we also see close up shots of a different I.D . We see her face at the end of the scene. She drops a key which gives us the thought that it is the safe key from which the money was stolen from.

    North by northwest

    Opening credits

We first see the company logo: Metro Goldwyn Mayer

The green background behind it is a recurring motif which is later joined by many lines coming appearing from the bottom and top. A perspective is happening changing into a grid. This can also be seen as chlostrophobic. Many names are introduced going up and a white line in the opposite direction like traffic.

The lines seem to imitate the outlines of windows like an office building in America which at first is an enigma for the audience.

The title of the film flies in with the copyrights being stated at the bottom of the screen.

Then more names appear after the title flies away and it becomes clear that a building is being created by these lines where there is the reflection of the traffic in a busy city. We can guess that this is New York because of all the yellow cabs.

The sound of this film is very fast paced, high pitched which is being played in the background by both strings; which are making the scurrying sort of sound and the overpowering brass instruments which makes it all jumpy. The brass and drums drive the rhythm around which the music director hopes to make the sound faster than the audience's heartbeat.

We then ge a high up shot just above the pedestrians heads to show they are just average people who are insignificant to the film. They are all constantly moving everywhere in and out of buildings up and down the streets.

We then see people endlessly go into the subway like a vortex is pulling them all in which suggests these people are going home from work as none of them are really in a hurry but they are never ending everywhere on every street.

We see the director being starred in his own film as we see him miss the bus. The music increases the effect of the swirling swarm of humanity.

    Creating opening title
Created an opening title scene using Final Cut Pro with the use of downloaded text from Dafont.com, downloaded a background effect from the blog TASMedia and used a few effects such as crystalise in Final Cut Pro.

First step was to download the font that was wanted to be used.

Had to import downloaded text into Final Cut to be used

Used a variety of effects to make the text stand out more

The trombone shot is when you zoom out whilst you move the camera forward on the dolly track. It is mostly used for zooming in on peoples faces and stair cases (see last picture in this post). It sometimes can demonstrate power and height.

There were no big problems with our project apart from the changing of clothes some people which resulted in more scenes being added. This is the final video that our group filmed for our continuity exercise. I am happy with the shots we were able to get and the way that they all link together really well. There are some things I would do different if I were to make another opening to a thriller movie. one thing I would improve upon would be to get everyone to wear the same clothing throughout, we did have some problems with that but they were hardly noticeable. also I would increase the amount of dialogue used in the opening.
